The normal (as far as I know) black nickel saxophone finish is an extremely thin layer of actual plating, probably the thinnest of all platings used in sax finishes. It is just thick enough for a uniform layer of color, just barely thicker than a layer of 'tarnish'.

I would not use toothpaste because it is slightly abrasive. Just use luke warm water with a SOFT toothbrush.
